The goal of this project is to expand the focus of GetActive! Penticton to include a healthy eating plan supporting the vision of a “healthier community”. This priority is supported by the outcomes of the Food Security Forum held in Penticton in November 2006. This forum which included representation from over 60 community stakeholders in the South Okanagan clearly indicated the need for a community wide approach to enhance nutritional health by addressing food security issues, nutrition knowledge, access to healthy food and ensuring a sustainable source of local food.
The Penticton Recreation Department and the GetActive! Penticton initiative was selected to pilot the Municipal Recreation Food Environment Action Toolkit this fall in partnership with the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association and the University of Victoria. As part of the pilot, a good of key partners have been brought together to review current food and beverage services at the Community Centre, McLaren Park Arena and the Penticton Memorial Arena and to provide recommendations of healthier choices. The committee will meet regularly over the next 6 months with the goal of making healthy choice an easy choice.
